Catwalk review: Gaultier’s way of saying “au revior”

Updated: Mar 8, 2021

The sexiest and most outstanding outfits out of Jean Paul Gaultier’s 50-year lasting career. Collected and shown on world’s famous models and muses on his final Spring/ Summer Haute Couture Show. Here’s a history tour made fashionable.

As one would expect, the 67-year-old celebrates in an extravagant way. The event took place at Paris Théâtre du Châtelet, oh you know, just near de Seine in the heart of Paris. The honour of opening the show was all Issa Lish, coming out of a coffin. Together with the dancers and upbeat music, the tone was set for the rest of the evening.

The atmosphere, not only on the runway but also in the audience was really playful and at some point, even funky. As soon as the first models walked down the stairs, the music changes from upbeat to live orchestra playing “It’s a man’s world”followed by French chansons to honour the French life, Gaultier loves so much. It was not that kind of runway where the models supposed to be calm and quiet. No, at this show the models where dancing, cheering and some even smoking! Nothing was too crazy for this final show.

The clothing was a real ensemble of Gaultier’s most iconic looks. For example, Madonna’s triangle-bra. Which took us immediately back to the 90’s. Also a 90’s baby, is the renewed version of the corset and then there was also the ever-elegant sailor inspired look from the 80’s.

You might want to take a look at the models, because not only the venue had a “wow”factor. For this show gender, age or size didn’t matter. Which is very a Gaultier-way to do things.

There were some new faces like Paris Jackson, making her runway debut (photo 1). Some very well-known faces like the sisters Hadid, Karlie Kloss and Winnie Harlow. And some extraordinary additions like muses from back in the days. For example, Dita von Teese in the iconic corset look (Photo 2) or the 69-year-old Amanda Lear carried in just a glitter top (Photo 3). As some say “La surprise Magistrale.”

During this one hour-long show, Gaultier took us on a trip down a glamorous fashion-memory lane. When at the end all the models gather on the steps of the stairs, singer Boy George opened his mouth and turned it in to a smashing party. Even Gaultier himself took this chance to dance on the runway and thanks his audience for the last time. But nothing to worry about. Gaultier is saying that he will continue Haute Couture in a new concept. We. Are. Excited. The man and the legend is saying au revoir, but not farewell.
